We will screen anyone aged between 40 and 70 years old who isn’t taking medication for high blood pressure or high cholesterol. We will also screen 25-40 year olds who have lifestyle or genetic risk factors that increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease such as family history of heart attacks, smoking, high alcohol intake and ethnicity.
Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Screening
The Guernsey Chest and Heart are working with Public Health to identify those within our community who are unaware that they have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol are two of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Many people live with undiagnosed high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol, increasing their risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and vascular dementia.
If you don’t know what your blood pressure or cholesterol is, why not come to one of our FREE clinics and get checked.
This project is running from September to December.
Dr Nicola Brink, Director of Public Health
"High blood pressure and high blood lipids occur frequently, and many people are unaware that they have these conditions. The early detection and treatment of these conditions can reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes and dementia. This is part of our programme to help islanders live longer and healthier lives. It is a great opportunity to reach more people in the community, especially those who might not realise they are at risk. Early detection can make a big difference to someone's health and quality of life."
We understand you may have questions relating to our screenings, here are some of the most frequently asked questions.
Who can come for a blood pressure and cholesterol check?
What is involved in the screening?
We will take your blood pressure using a machine which gently squeezes your arm. We may do this more than once. Your cholesterol is measured by taking a blood test by pricking your finger. All of the result are given to you before you leave.
Do the results get sent to my doctor?
Unlike our 5 yearly screening programme, the results of the blood pressure and cholesterol screening are NOT sent to your GP. We will make recommendations based on your results to enable you to take control of your health.
Do I have to be registered with a doctor to have this screening?
No. Unlike our 5 year screening programme, the results of these tests are for your information to enable you to take control of your health.
How long does this screening take?
About 15 minutes.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the screening?
Wearing a top with short or loose fitting sleeves will make it easier for you to have your blood pressure taken.
Will you be keeping a record of my results?
Yes. We will ask you to complete a short lifestyle questionnaire, including your contact details, and these will be kept in accordance with our data privacy policy.
