Tributes paid to Former Chair Dr Stephen Brennand Roper BEM

The Board of Guernsey Chest and Heart is deeply saddened to announce the death of its former Chair, Dr Stephen Brennand Roper BEM, who passed away after a short and unexpected illness.

Dr Brennand Roper dedicated more than three decades of service to Guernsey Chest and Heart, joining the charity as Medical Director in 1995 and later serving as Chair from 2015 until stepping down earlier this year. His leadership played a pivotal role in guiding the charity through a period of significant development and change.

During his tenure, he helped modernise services, championed best clinical practice, and oversaw major projects including the design and construction of the charity’s premises on the hospital site and the introduction of improved IT systems to support patient care. He also led the organisation through the challenges of the Covid‑19 pandemic, ensuring the continuity of vital screening services for the island community.

In recognition of his distinguished medical career and exceptional contribution to charitable work, Dr Brennand Roper was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2025.

Following his decision to step down as Chair after more than 30 years of involvement with the charity, Jurat Sally‑Ann David, a board member of 20 years, was appointed Chair.

Paying tribute, Jurat Sally‑Ann David said:

“Dr Brennand Roper gave extraordinary service to Guernsey Chest and Heart and to the wider community. His wisdom, compassion and unwavering commitment were instrumental in shaping the charity and strengthening its impact. We have lost a deeply respected colleague and friend, and he will be greatly missed.”

The Board, staff and volunteers of Guernsey Chest and Heart extend their sincere condolences to Dr Brennand Roper’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.
